Mat Walsh
Biography

I’m a British artist and writer living and working in the Netherlands. My work begins with a curiosity about the objects, ideas and cultural references that surround us, and the meanings we attach to them.

At the centre of my practice is Objectology, an artistic philosophy I am developing around the relationship between objects, art and human meaning. Objects can carry histories, memories, associations and identities. I use these qualities to create works that bring familiar things into unfamiliar contexts, exploring what they might reveal about who we are, what we value and how we see the world.

My practice moves between art, design, culture and society, often drawing on technology, religion, politics, nostalgia and changing social values. Sometimes an object leads to an idea; sometimes an idea leads me to the object. The resulting work can be playful, unsettling, nostalgic or provocative, but the object itself remains central to the meaning.

My approach has been shaped by more than twenty years working in the art world. I began my career as a London-based art dealer, later moving into digital communication and content, where I worked with technology, engineering and emerging fields including IoT, robotics and automation. Across both disciplines, the underlying interest has remained much the same: understanding how things acquire meaning, and finding ways to make people look at them differently.

In 2020, I turned that perspective towards my own artistic practice. I now work from Atelier146, my studio and gallery in Delft.
